2009 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List
BALTIMORE, Md. – Five Orange men's lacrosse players have been named to the 2009Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List which was released on Thursday, Feb. 19 by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. Seniors Matt Abbott, Kenny Nims, Dan Hardy and sophomores John Galloway and Joel White are candidates for the award which is presented to the college lacrosse player of the year.
Syracuse's five nominees matched Virginia for the most nominees from any one school. In all, 60 players are considered candidates for the award which will be presented on May 28.
Abbott is considered one of the best all-around midfielders in the game. He scored a goal in SU's win against Providence and scooped up four ground balls. Last season, Abbott was second on the team with 73 ground balls. He had 21 points and 13 goals in 2008 on his way to being named to the USILA All-America Third Team.
Nims got off to fast start in 2009, scoring a career-best eight points in SU's season-opening win against the Friars. Nims tied his career high in the game with five assists. He is the Orange's leading returning scorer (58 points) and was an honorable mention USILA All-American last season.
Hardy also netted a goal against Providence. The 6-4 midfielder scored 40 points last season and was selected as a USILA Honorable Mention All-American. He was also named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team for his role in helping the Orange win the 2008 NCAA title.
Galloway earned his 17th win in 19 career starts Sunday against the Friars. He made four saves in three quarters of action. Galloway became the fifth true freshman netminder to start for an NCAA champion in 2008. He made 150 saves and owned a season goals-against average of 7.78.
White did not play against Providence due to injury. As the team's top long pole last year, he ranked third on the team with 63 ground balls. He also scored three goals.
The Tewaaraton Trophy has been presented each year since 2001. Syracuse attackman Mike Leveille won the award last year. He was the second Orange player to do so, joining 2002 and 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy winner Mike Powell.
The Orange looks to improve to 2-0 on the young season when it hosts No. 18 Army Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
