SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's and women's track & field team took part in two events on Friday, both of which occurred in the Empire State. The first meet the Orange competed at was in the comfy confines of Manley Field House at the two-day Syracuse Invitational. Friday's slate consisted of multi-events where sophomore Kelsey Ruebor was crowned the pentathlon champion.
The other meet was held at the Armory Track located on 168th Street in Manhattan at the New Balance Collegiate. Two more Syracuse indoor records were reset thanks to the outstanding season offered up by the Orange sprinting squad.
At the Syracuse Invitational, Rubeor took home the women's pentathlon title amongst nine other competitors with a total of 3,148 points on Friday evening. Rubeor posted a first-place mark of 12.69m in the shot put which is an SU indoor best thus far in 2009. The Murrieta Valley, Calif. native also claimed second in the 55-meter hurdles race with a time of 9.01.
Sophomore Priscilla Illarazza hoisted the bronze with 2,918 points. Illarazza's best showing came in the high jump with a first-place leap of 1.62m in the high jump.
Sophomores Evan Stivala and Nick Damato got off to a good start in the men's heptathlon which will conclude tomorrow at Manley Field House. Stivala stood on the first-place podium in high jump with a BIG EAST-qualifying vault of 1.93m and a 6.55m mark in the long jump. Damato heaved the shot put for a second-place length of 11.41m.
The running events and the conclusion of the men's heptathlon will commence Saturday, Feb. 7 at Manley Field House.
In the City that Never Sleeps, sophomore Flings Owusu-Agyapong broke her own record in the 60-meter dash at the second-straight meet with a new standard and NCAA-Provisional mark of 7.38. The Toronto, Ontario native broke her old record of 7.42 from Penn State in the prelims by shaving one-hundredth of a second with a time of 7.41.
Senior hurdler Ramon Sosa returned to prime form, eclipsing his own record in the 60-meter hurdles he set at last year's NCAA Championship. Sosa's old benchmark of 7.78 was outdone on Friday night at the Armory with a second-place, NCAA-Provisional time of 7.75.
Senior Skyy Simmons locked up an IC4A bid in the 500-meter with a sixth-place time of 1:03.60.
Sophomore transfer Jarret Eaton nipped at his teammate's heels in the 60-meter hurdles with an NCAA-Provisional clip of 7.87 for fourth place.
In the preliminaries of the 60-meter championship, sophomore Sham Lewis motored for an NCAA-Provisional time of 6.78 while senior Antoine Clark reeled off an NCAA-Provisional and personal best time of 6.79
In the men's 400-meter, sophomore Da'Mon Merkerson, also a member of the Orange football team, finished up in 50.59 in the prelims. Simmons closed out the oval in 48.80.
Freshman Karelle Edwards offered up a time of 9.02 in the women's 60-meter hurdles preliminary. In the men's 60-meter hurdles preliminary, senior Terry Marshall finished in 22nd with an IC4A-qualifyin time of 8.22. Freshman Matthew Callanan closed out the race in BIG EAST-qualifying fashion in 8.54.
In the men's 60-meter dash, senior Mike LeBlanc finished up in sixth place with an NCAA-Provisional time of 6.72, tying his best mark he put forth at Penn State last week.
The Orange will finish up at the Syracuse Invitational and New Balance Challenge tomorrow. The SU tracksters will also put their best foot forward at the 2009 Cross Country Championship in Derwood, Md. Junior Brad Miller, Syracuse indoor mile record holder, and senior Kyle Heath, the former mile champion, will compete against the world's elite in a mile race at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College.
