Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Gavin Jenkinson (Stuart, Fla.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 13, 2009.

Jenkinson helped the Syracuse men's lacrosse team cruise to a 10-3 victory against Rutgers on Saturday, April 11 at the Carrier Dome. The Orange won 10-of-14 faceoffs with Jenkinson leading the team winning 7-of-9 (.778).

The midfielder has appeared in eight games this season for head coach John Desko. He has won 27-of-43 faceoffs for a team-leading percentage of .628. Early this season, he won a career-high 10 faceoffs at Loyola, including eight in the fourth quarter.

Jenkinson, a finance major in the Whitman School of Management, and the rest of the men's lacrosse team will be back in action Friday, April 17. The Orange host Albany at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

Sophomore Flings Owusu-Agyapong (Toronto, Ontario) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 13, 2009.

Owusu-Agyapong was one of three first place finished by the Orange track & field team at the UNC Invitational on Saturday. She won the 100-meter dash with an NCAA-Regional qualifying time of 11.66. She owned the highest seeding coming into Saturday's challenge.

Owusu-Agyapong has been a top performer for head coach Chris Fox all season. During the indoor season, the sprinter placed third in the 60-meter dash at the BIG EAST Championship with a time a 7.46. She then followed up that performance with a first place finish in the same event at the ECAC Championship with a time of 7.44.

A health and wellness major in the College of Human Ecology, Owusu-Agyapong and the rest of the SU track & field team will head to Princeton this weekend. The Orange will compete in the two-day Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational beginning April 17.
