2009 Tewaaraton Trophy Nominees
BALTIMORE, Md. – Three Orange seniors havebeen selected as nominees for the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy. The trio of Matt Abbott, Kenny Nims and Dan Hardy joined 18 other Division I standouts on the official list of nominees released by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation on Wednesday, April 15.
The Tewaaraton Trophy has been presented to the national player of the year every season since 2001 and will be handed out on May 28 in Washington, D.C.
Abbott is considered one of the best all-around midfielders in the game. He has nine goals and six assists and leads the Orange with 50 ground balls. Abbott tallied a career-best four points (2g, 2a) in Syracuse's win over Johns Hopkins earlier in the year. He was also picked to Inside Lacrosse's Midseason All-America Second Team and he is a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award presented to the nation's most outstanding student-athlete.
Nims ranks third nationally in points per game (4.18) and fourth in assists per game (2.18) and leads the team in both categories with 46 points and 24 assists. He has at least one point in each of his last 27 games dating back to last season and scored a career-best eight points in SU's season-opening win against Providence.
Hardy is the Orange's top scoring midfielder with 27 points, including 15 goals. He recorded the 100th point of his career in February against Virgina and has two five point games this season (Army and Loyola). Against the Greyhounds, Hardy finished with four goals, including the game-winner, as Syracuse rallied for a 14-13 victory.
Syracuse attackman Mike Leveille won the Tewaaraton Trophy last year. He was the second Orange player to do so, joining 2002 and 2004 winner Mike Powell.
Syracuse looks to improve to 10-2 on the year when it hosts Albany on Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live in Central New York on Time Warner 26.
