SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange wrapped up a busy outdoor weekend all over the map and now switches its focus to the Princeton Sam Howell Invitational starting on Friday, March 3.
Princeton's Weaver Track & Field Stadium will house the two-day event with a total of 16 teams competing. Those squads include Binghamton, Bowdoin, Colgate, Columbia, Cortland, Dartmouth, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Princeton, Rutgers, St. John's, Southern Connecticut State, Vermont, Yale and the Shore Athletic Club.
The invitational kicks off at 4 p.m. with the women's hammer throw. A full schedule of events can be found below.
In Syracuse's opening weekend, the Orange put forth strong performances at the Florida State Relays and the Stanford Invitational. SU also sent two freshmen to the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championship in Amman, Jordan to run in the Junior Men's division for the United States.
In Tallahassee, junior Uhunoma Osazuwa ran away with the women's heptathlon crown to highlight the Orange performance. Classmate Lorraine Hill took first-place finish in the javelin throw with a BIG EAST-qualifying mark of 38.70m. Syracuse finished up with two-first place finishes, five second-place performances and one third-place showing at Florida State.
In Palo Alto, Calif., the SU distance team put on a show against a talent-rich pool of athletes last weekend. Senior steeplechaser Kyle Heath's second-place, NCAA Regional time of 8.40.89 currently stands as the fastest collegiate steeplechase mark of 2009. Heath is SU's record holder in the steeplechase after his sixth-place performance of 8:38.03 at the 2008 Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Championship. Sophomores Catherine DeSarle and Katie Hursey both surpassed the school record in the 5,000-meter run. DeSarle and Hursey picked up third and fourth, respectively, with NCAA Regional marks of 16:44.61 and 16:46.93.
Overseas, the world's elite came together for the IAAF World Cross Country Championship in Amman, Jordan. Syracuse's freshmen contingent of Pat Dupont and Tito Medrano represented the Orange with 48th and 62nd place times of 25:52 and 26:18, in that order, of the 8K event. The Americans finished in fifth place out of 18 other countries, finishing behind the champion Kenyan team as well as the Ethiopians, Eritreans and Ugandans.
