Kohl Hits First Homer in Orange Sweep

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Orange softball team played its final non-conference doubleheader of the season Wednesday evening with a sweep of Siena. Syracuse pitchers Brittany Gardner and Jenna Caira allowed zero runs as the Orange shutout the Saints by scores of 2-0 and 5-0. SU improves to 28-14 on the season.
Senior Amy Kelley led the Orange in game one going 2-for-3. SU's two runs came from pinch runner freshman Nicole Lamison and third baseman Lacey Kohl. In game two, senior Nicole Miller was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate scoring three runs. Kohl finished 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, the first of her career.
Game One
The Saints were unable to capitalize on two early opportunities in game one. In the bottom of the third with bases loaded and two outs, sophomore pitcher Angie Sagnelli secured the final out fielding a ball from Siena's Jamie Piela and throwing it to first baseman Miller for the out.
Siena's second opportunity came an inning later. With three on-base and only one out, relief pitcher Gardner struck out two batters in a row to keep the Saints off the board.
Syracuse's two runs came in the bottom of the fourth. Kelley opened with a single up the middle. A sac bunt from Miller advanced Lamison, who pinch ran for Kelley, to second. After Kohl was hit by a pitch, freshman Gaby Torzilli singled to left field to load the bases. Senior Jorden Rosen batted in the first run of the game and a sac fly from senior Lindsay Wasek brought home Kohl to make it 2-0.
Neither team recorded another hit for the remainder of the game. Gardner improved to 8-7 on the season throwing eight strikeouts in 3.2 hitless innings.
Game Two
Miller and Kohl opened the second inning of game two with back-to-back singles. Freshman Kelly Saco was walked at SU's next at-bat to load the bases. From there, the Orange took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly to left field from Rosen which plated Miller.
The Orange scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Kelling led off with a single up the middle before both sophomore Hallie Gibbs and Kelly flew out. After Miller was walked, Kohl hit a three-run homer over the right field wall to give Syracuse a 4-0 advantage.
Syracuse added its final run in the sixth. Miller singled up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out from Kohl. She moved to third on a Saco single to left field and scored on a sac fly to left field by Rosen.
Caira pitched a complete game to improve to 14-6 on the season. She allowed only one hit and and threw 10 strikeouts for the second double-digit strikeout game of her career.
What's Next
Syracuse heads on its final road trip of the season this weekend. Up first for the Orange is No. 20/19 DePaul on Saturday, April 25 at noon. SU meets the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on Sunday at 11 a.m.
