SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 20/19 DePaul proved too much for the Syracuse softball team (28-16, 11-7) Saturday afternoon as the Blue Demons swept the Orange. After a 4-0 shutout in game one, SU took a 2-0 lead early in game two. However, the Blue Demons rallied for a 5-2 victory.
“DePaul is a very strong team,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “We needed to bring our best game today, but we had a few mistakes that hurt. We have to capitalize on the opportunities we get and we just didn't. What's important now is that we go out and play our best game tomorrow against Notre Dame.”
Senior Lindsay Wasek led the squad going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a home run in the doubleheader. In game two, senior Nicole Miller was 2-for-3 and freshman Lacey Kohl finished the game 1-for-3 scoring a run.
Game One
It was a tough first game for the Orange on offense as the SU squad registered just one hit. Wasek singled to left field in the top of the second advancing Miller, who had been walked to start the inning, to third. However, Miller was picked off by catcher Jackie Tarulli-Fish at third to send the Orange to defense.
The Blue Demons scored their first run in the bottom of the third when Amber Patton scored on a double from Tarulli-Fish. DePaul then made it a 2-0 game in the fourth. Sean Plese, who was walked, scored on a double to left centerfield by Patton.
After a scoreless fifth, DePaul put the game away in the sixth with its final two runs. Plese led off for DePaul with a single. After stealing second, Plese advanced to third on a base-hit from Tara Voss. A single up the middle from Patton scored both Plese and Voss to give the Blue Demons the 4-0 advantage.
Caira scattered six hits during the game and had a game-high nine strikeouts.
Game Two
Syracuse took an early 2-0 lead in game two scoring the first runs of the game in the second inning. Kohl led off with a single up the middle, before Wasek followed with a two-run home run to left field.
DePaul answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Plese slammed a triple down the left field line to score teammates Brittney Yniguez and Voss to tie the game, 2-2.
The Blue Demons kept the offensive push coming in the fourth with two more runs. DePaul's Lynsey Ciezki singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw plating Plese who had reached on a bunt. A double to right centerfield by Tarulli-Fish scored Ciezki to make it a 4-2 game. The Blue Demon's final run came in the fifth to produce the final score.
