Orange fullback Tony Fiammetta is 10th Syracuse player to join the Carolina Panthers organization. The Panthers used the 28th pick in the fourth round (148th overall) of the 2009 National Football League Draft to take the Orange All-American. Fiammetta is the first Syracuse fullback to be chosen in the NFL Draft since the Seattle Seahawks selected Chris Davis in the fifth round in 2003.
Fiammetta became the 43rd Orange football student-athlete to earn All-America honors and was the 52nd Syracuse player to earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl. A 2008 Syracuse captain, Fiammetta was named to the 2008 Pro Football Weekly All-America Team, which annually honors the most talented players in college football and is determined based on considerable feedback from NFL evaluators taking into consideration a player's pure talent and contribution to his team.
Fiammetta played in 44 games at Syracuse, as a fullback and on special teams. In 2008, he was a receiving threat out of the backfield and is the third-leading receiver (16 receptions for 127 yards). In his four years at Syracuse, Fiammetta had 16 carries for 89 yards, including a career-long 58-yard run at Cincinnati in his final game for the Orange, and 28 receptions for 202 yards and one touchdown.
