After the Vice President of the United States and Syracuse alum Joseph Biden imparted some inspiring words at SU's graduation ceremony at the Carrier Dome on Sunday, the men and women's lacrosse teams maintained the level of excitement in the final home contests of the 2008-09 season. The No. 2-seeded men's team started its quest for the program's 11th national championship with an 11-4 victory against first-time opponent Siena in the first round of the NCAA Tournament while the No. 7-seeded women dominated Boston University, 20-10. Senior attacker Katie Rowan's 11 points helped her climb to third place on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with 389 points in her career. With the two first-round triumphs, both squads earned second-round match-ups against the University of Maryland.
The Orange softball squad bowed out to USF in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday in Louisville. Syracuse led 1-0 for a better part of the game, but the Bulls charged back and won in extra innings, 5-4. Freshman hurler Jenna Caira was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. Caira is only the third SU player to earn rookie honors and the first since Tonye McCorkle in 2006.
The men's crew team had one boat reach the grand final and won the freshman eight petite final on Sunday at the 2009 Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass. Syracuse's varsity eight boat finished third in the first heat with a time of 5:48.312. The women's crew will hit the water on Sunday, May 17 its Eastern Sprints race in Camden, N.J.
The track & field team had the weekend off to prepare for the ECAC/IC4A Outdoor Championship starting on Friday, May 15 at Princeton.
Softball
Before the Orange commenced its first round of the BIG EAST Tournament, four members of the Syracuse softball team earned all-conference honors. Most notably, freshman pitcher Jenna Caira was named the league's Rookie of the Year. Three members of the Orange were named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team, including Caira and seniors Nicole Miller and Lindsay Wasek. Senior catcher Amy Kelley was named to the all-conference second team.
On Thursday at Louisville's Ulmer Stadium, Syracuse took an early 1-0 lead after sophomore Rachel Helman got on base with a single. The Orange juiced the bases and sophomore Hallie Gibbs knocked in Helman on a sacrifice fly and error by USF's right fielder. The Bulls tied it at the top of the seventh, 1-1, but SU responded in extra innings.
South Florida tacked on four runs in the top of the ninth. SU made things interesting as the Orange put runners on the corners in the bottom of the second extra frame. Freshman Stephanie Watts crushed her fifth triple of the season to bring in freshman Lacey Kohl and Wasek. A USF throwing error moved the score to 5-4, but the Bulls escaped and hung on for the win.
Syracuse finished with a 30-21 record, going 11-9 in the BIG EAST.
