Former SU great Dave Bing started a new job on Monday, May 11, when he was sworn in as Mayor of Detroit. Jim Boeheim, Bing's college teammate, sees a great future for Detroit with Bing leading the way.
"Dave Bing is the best leader I've ever been around in 40 years here at Syracuse," says Boeheim. "He's a leader on and off the court and a guy who is great at getting people to work together. I believe he has the qualities that would make an excellent mayor. He should be great for the people of the city of Detroit."
Boeheim and Bing both enrolled at Syracuse in 1962. The following year they began a successful three-year run on the varsity basketball team that was capped by an NCAA Tournament berth for the Orange in 1966. Bing went on to a successful career in the NBA, primarily with the Detroit Pistons, before embarking on a career in business.
When the Detroit mayor position opened last year, Bing decided to enter the race. He was elected in May and will complete the open term of mayor for the remainder of the year.. The next mayoral election is scheduled for the fall, starting with an August 4 primary and ending with a November general election.
