Catching Up With Wes Johnson

Syracuse men's basketball fans aren't the only ones anxious to see Wes Johnson in an Orange uniform. There's Wes himself! A transfer student from Iowa State, Johnson sat out last season per NCAA rules. He did practice with the Orange and now is eligible to take the court.
Wes, what have you been doing for the last month?
Last month I've just been training and working out. I went to the Vince Carter camp in Orlando (Florida) and participated in that, so I've been rippin' around and back and forth from Texas to Florida just working out.
What was the Vince Carter camp?
It was an elite skills camp that I was invited to.
Who participated in the camp?
A selected few college players and a selected few high school players got to be involved in it.
Was Vince Carter there?
Yes, he came the last two days. He participated with us and played with us.
What were your impressions of Vince Carter?
It was good to see him play. We wanted to see him dunk but he didn't really get to dunk too much.
Were you also invited to the LeBron James Skills Camp?
Yes I was.
And when was that?
It was actually over with today (July 8). I didn't go to it because I was attending summer school at Syracuse.
You have two more months before fall semester start. What kind of things are you going to be doing besides summer school?
Working out and trying to help the freshmen. I'm just really doing school and working on my game and trying to get stronger.
Is there any part of your game specifically that you're working on?
I'm working on ballhandling, shooting, my overall game in general. I'm trying to be a complete player.
What work are you doing with strength and conditioning coach Ryan Cabiles?
He's helping me with my lower body. I'm attempting to be more explosive.
Are you anxious to play in a real Syracuse game?
Oh yeah, very anxious.
Does it feel like it's been forever since you've suited up? Forever! I'm very anxious to play.
You were exposed to a lot of the Big 12 Conference at Iowa State and then this past year you watched the BIG EAST Conference. What were your impressions? It was different, a different atmosphere. I can tell especially when we played Georgetown. There were 30,000 people sitting up there so it was a different type of feeling for a college game.
An experience like that, does it make you feel like you've made the right choice coming to Syracuse?
Yes I think I did. I think you get to experience a different type of college game when you come here especially when you see the 30,000 fans.
Even though you haven't played in a game I get the sense that the Syracuse community has welcomed you. Is that true?
Yes, and I'm very appreciative of that.
