
SU Athletics Celebrates Historic Year

A school record point total in the NACDA Learfield Director's Cup standings, back-to-back National Championships for the Orange men's lacrosse team, a six-overtime men's basketball BIG EAST Tournament victory, a field hockey final four, All-American performances by runner Kyle Heath and long jumper Bernard Bush and NCAA championship appearances for women's cross country, men's basketball, women's lacrosse highlight an extraordinary year for Syracuse University Athletics. The 330.0 points the Orange scored in the 2008-09 National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) Learfield Director's Cup is the most in school history. Syracuse also has two ESPY Award nominations to brag about, including one for the Syracuse-Connecticut six- overtime basketball game at the BIG EAST Tournament, which is a nominee for Best Game along with Super Bowl XLIII and the 2008 Wimbledon tennis final, and “The Express,” the story of legendary Syracuse running back Ernie Davis, which is a finalist for Best Sports Movie. Winners in all categories are determined exclusively by fan voting and will be announced at the 2009 ESPY Awards on July 19. After its second consecutive national championship, the men's lacrosse team was honored by Vice President and Syracuse graduate Joe Biden '68 at his ceremonial office in the Executive Office Building. After speaking with the team, Biden escorted the team to the West wing of the White house where President Barrack Obama emerged from the Oval Office to congratulate and shake hands with the team and coaches. That evening, the team enjoyed a cook out and pool party at Biden's private residence. The Orange won its second straight national championship on Memorial Day, rallying from a three goal deficit to beat Cornell 10 to 9 in overtime. Looking ahead all Orange fans are invited to the Carrier Dome on Saturday, September 5 to kick off the Doug Marrone Era. Marrone and the 2009 football Orange host Minnesota (12:00 p.m., ESPN2).
