First-year head coach Doug Marrone had a number of goals entering his first preseason camp as the leader at his alma mater, including installing the new schemes for the offense and defense and focusing on conditioning. With camp officially concluded and the 2009 season opener against Minnesota 10 days away (Sept. 5, 12:00 p.m., ESPN2), Marrone assessed the team's performance and turned his attention to the first game.
"What happens now is we start to narrow it down," said Marrone of the plan after the installation of the new offensive and defensive playbooks. "The players have at least touched on a system so if something happens during the course of the year, we'll be able to have some type of recall for them with the plays that we have."
The conditioning program the student-athletes participated in during the summer has been a topic of conversation throughout the preseason.
"I feel good about our conditioning in the Dome," Marrone said. "As a former player here, I believe I know a lot more than most people about playing games there and how hard it was for me and [Coach MacPherson] back then. We did a lot of work in the Dome. We conditioned in the Dome. and our off-season workouts were in the Dome quite a bit, so I knew it was a tough venue to play. I knew that I wanted to make sure our players were conditioned for it and it is something that we can use as we talk to our players as an advantage."
