COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Eliza Bennett-Hattan became the school's all-time leader in saves and freshman Tina Romagnuolo scored a pair of goals in the Orange's 2-2 tie against Drake on Sunday, August 30. Bennett-Hattan made three saves against the Bulldogs, giving her 12 in the two games at the Colorado College/Fairfield Inn Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bennett-Hattan recorded her first save of the game and the 255th of her career at the 15:56 mark, which gave her sole possession of first place on Syracuse's career leader list. She entered Sunday's game tied for the top spot with Shannon Myers, who posted 254 saves from 2001-04. Bennett-Hattan now has 257 saves in her career.
“It's great to make your mark, but I don't keep track of personal records,” Bennett-Hattan said. “To me, it means that I'm doing my job, but there are higher places to go.”
After neither team scored in the first half, Drake (1-2-1) took the lead on Laura Moklestad's unassisted goal in the 73rd minute. The Bulldogs increased their lead 65 seconds later when Blair Nelson recorded an unassisted goal. Romagnuolo cut the lead in half with a goal in the 87th minute and then tied the score with just 38 seconds left in regulation with her team-leading third goal of the season. Drake got a shot off with four seconds remaining, but Bennett-Hattan made the save to force overtime.
Syracuse (0-2-1) dominated the overtime periods, outshooting Drake, 4-1, but neither team could find the back of the net, resulting in a 2-2 tie.
“The team showed tremendous effort and it's something to build on,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “It's disappointing to dominate a team and not come away with a win, but to come back from being two goals down is a feat.”
The Orange recorded 24 shots to 10 for Drake, and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Bennett-Hattan finished with three saves, while Kourtney Arnold had nine for Drake.
Syracuse is back on the road next weekend when it plays at Fordham on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Binghamton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
