Syracuse had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 2-0 setback at St. John's on Friday, Sept. 18. It was the BIG EAST opener for both squads.
All of the scoring took place in the first half. The Orange (3-3-2, 0-1) extended its string of minutes played without allowing a goal to 390:37 before Kelly McConnell scored on an assist from Nicole Doran to give St. John's a 1-0 lead. The Red Storm netted the final goal of the game on Kaitlin Haas' second goal of the season off an assist from Amanda Pasciolla in the 41st minute for the 2-0 final.
“It was a hard-fought game between two evenly matched teams,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “They have some very good players, but we were able to cope with their pressure. We had two breakdowns in the back in the first half. We had numerous scoring opportunities but we just didn't finish. We are creating opportunities, but at some point someone has to step up and finish. It's a disappointing loss after we've played so well.”
St. John's outshot Syracuse, 9-7, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made three saves for the Orange, while the Red Storms' Kristin Russell had four stops.
Syracuse is back in action on Sunday at St. Joseph's at 1 p.m.
