PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – In its final non-conference contest of the season, Syracuse lost a 1-0 decision at St. Joseph's on Sunday, Sept. 20. The Orange goes to 3-4-2 overall, while the Hawks improve to 3-3-2.
The game featured an evenly played first half as both teams recorded two shots on goal. The Orange controlled the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net. St. Joseph's scored the only goal of the game in the 79th minute when Maggie Lupinski put her shot from the left side inside the post for the game-winner. Lauren Sutcliffe was credited with an assist on the play. Syracuse had a chance to tie the score with a corner kick with 21 seconds remaining, but couldn't get a shot off.
“Again, we dominated the game and held possession,” said Orange head coach Phil Wheddon. “We had opportunities to score. We're trying to change the program in different ways. The players have to believe they can win.”
Syracuse outshot St. Joseph's, 11-7, and had six corner kicks to four for the Hawks. Senior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made three saves for the Orange, while SJU's Christine Neal had four stops.
After starting the season with nine straight road games, Syracuse plays its home opener on Thursday against Providence at 7 p.m. Admission to the game is free of charge.
