Syracuse head football coach Doug Marrone has added Nathaniel Hackett and Roger Harriott to his coaching staff. Hackett will mentor the Orange quarterbacks and the passing game and Harriott will coach the running backs. In addition, Marrone will call the offensive plays.
“The hiring of Nathaniel and Roger completes our coaching staff in a terrific manner,” Marrone said. “They both have a great knowledge of the game and bring a blend of experience and youthfulness to the program. Nathaniel and Roger, and our other new coaches, Rob Moore and Jimmy Brumbaugh, are strong communicators and will relate well to the student-athletes in our program.
“The coaching staff we have is a good mix of experienced veterans and young coaches with strong potential which will aid us well in the continued rejuvenation of the program.”
Hackett's seven years of coaching experience includes four seasons in the National Football League and three on the collegiate level. Since 2008 he has been an offensive quality control coach for the Buffalo Bills, assisting with the wide receivers and quarterbacks and participating in all facets of preparation for the weekly opponent. Hackett's first position in the NFL was as a quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006 and 2007. He worked closely with all members of the offensive coaching staff in the preparation and implementation of the offensive game plan, including wide receivers coach Richard Mann, while helping guide WR Joey Galloway to his third consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season in 2007.
As a collegiate coach, Hackett was on the staff at Stanford from 2003 through 2005 after beginning his coaching career at his alma mater, University of California at Davis, in 2003 as the assistant linebackers coach. At Stanford, Hackett was an offensive assistant in 2003, served as the offensive and defensive coordinator's assistant in 2004 and was the recruiting coordinator and specialists coach in 2005.
A native of Fullerton, Calif., Hackett earned a B.S. in neurobiology, physiology and behaviors from the UC Davis in 2002, where he was a four-year football letterwinner. In 1998 he won the George Belenis Award as the team's Most Outstanding Redshirt and in 2002 he earned the “Aggie Pride” Award. He and his wife, Megan, have a son, Harrison, and a daughter, Briar. He is the son of Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett.
Harriott joins the Orange after serving as the director of athletics and head football coach at University School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He led the team to a four-year record of 35-10. He is also the founder and program director of the Athletic Academic, Inc., an inclusive program for physical fitness, social and character development, and is a youth ministry leader for Christ the Rock Community Church. In 2004, Harriott was named a Broward County Teacher of the Year finalist and was a three-time finalist for Broward County Football Coach of the Year award in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Harriott began his coaching career as the football coach and head track & field coach at Stevens High School in 2000.
A football letterwinner at Villanova, Harriott played running back under the direction of former Orange coach Stan Drayton in 1998 after transferring from Boston University where he played for three years. Harriott gained 2,057 yards on 396 carries and scored 11 touchdowns and had 29 receptions for 154 yards as a collegiate player. He earned 1997 All-Atlantic 10 honors and was named team MVP as a junior at Boston University. A native of Mandeville, Jamaica, Harriott earned his degree in communications from Villanova.
