SU Best in Show, Tame Great Danes, 2-1

ALBANY, N.Y. – A goal by All-American Martina Loncarica 6:51 into overtime propelled the ninth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey squad to a 2-1 victory at No. 18 Albany today at Alumni Turf Field. The Orange improves to 8-4 with the victory, while the Great Danes move to 11-3. Senior forward Kristin Girouard scored SU's other goal late in the first half. Loncarica and freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer both recorded assists for Syracuse.
“We were able to create a good attack and the team came out hard and competed. We found away to win that that is Syracuse hockey,” head coach Ange Bradley said.
Albany got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Corrine McConville in the 26th minute on a penalty corner. Christina Patrick inserted the ball to Suzy Clephane who tapped the ball to McConville for a hard shot straight into cage past freshman goalkeeper Rachel Sayer.
Syracuse tied the game before half, as Loncarica crossed a ball from the left to Girouard, who deflected the ball into the top of the cage at 32:16.
The two teams played through a scoreless second half to head into an extra period.
Loncarica took a tip from Geyer in front of the cage, putting the ball past Albany goalkeeper Kristi Troch into the low right post with just under seven minutes into overtime.
Sayer made three saves in her first career action. Troch made eight saves from the Great Danes. Christine Hoffman made eight saves in the first half.
Syracuse outshot Albany, 24-6, including a 10-0 advantage in the second half. SU also held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The Orange returns to action when it travels back to the capital city to face No. x Stanford on Friday, October 15 at noon.
Notes
Loncarica has recorded a team-best 19 points off a team-high seven goals and five assists.
She is second on SU's all-time points list with 107. The junior is also first on SU's all-time assist list with 53.
Geyer has registered a team-best eight assists.
Girouard has tallied five points off two goals and one assist.
