
Late Goals Lead to Orange Victory

ALBANY, N.Y. – The eighth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team used two late goals to slip past No. 20 Stanford, 2-1, in overtime today at Alumni Turf Field on the University of Albany campus. Sophomore back Amy Kee and junior forward Heather Susek provided the Orange goals, while senior back Maggie Befort and freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer both tallied one assist. Syracuse improves to 9-4, while the Cardinal moves to 8-4.
Stanford scored first at the 22:05 mark of the first half off its second penalty corner of the day. Becky Dru's direct hit off a stop from Stephanie Bryne and a push from Kelsey Lloyd found the back of the cage.
Syracuse wasn't able to break through despite its seven penalty corners and six shots first-half shots.
The game remained a stalemate even though SU played with a man down for five minutes of the second half.
Kee tied the score at 1-1 at the 60:47 mark off Syracuse's 11th penalty corner of the afternoon. Befort inserted the ball to Kee who then took a shot from the left side of the circle. It was Kee's third goal and eight point of the season. It was Befort's third assist and ninth point of the year. Befort is Syracuse's all-time leading scorer with 114 points. She is also second on SU's all-time assist chart with 48.
Neither team could break the tie, sending the game into an extra seven-on-seven session.
Both squads had opportunities, but it wasn't until the 82:52 mark that the Orange was able to seal the deal. Playing a man up after the Cardinal received a yellow card at 81:08, SU went on the attack.
It was then that Susek found the back of the cage after taking a right-to-left pass from Geyer. It was Susek's fifth goal and 13th point of the season and Geyer's team-best ninth assist and 15th point.
Stanford outshot Syracuse, 17-12, but the Orange held a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Sayer made six saves in just her second career game. Alessandra Moss made two for the Cardinal.
The Orange returns to action tomorrow when it travels to our Nation's Capital to do battle with the Georgetown Hoyas at 1 p.m. at the William I. Jacob Recreational Complex on the campus of American University. A win would secure an Orange berth in the BIG EAST Championship at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex on the University of Connecticut campus Nov. 6 and Nov. 7.
