MILWAUKEE – The Syracuse men's soccer team (2-6-5, 0-2-3) had its three-game unbeaten streak stopped on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Orange lost, 3-0, to Marquette (5-4-4, 2-1-2) in a BIG EAST crossover match at Valley Fields. The Orange had been 1-0-2 in its last three outings prior to the loss.
Saturday's game was a tight, one-goal affair until the Golden Eagles struck twice in the game's final eight minutes. Marquette leading scorer Calum Mallace tallied the team's first two goals. The Golden Eagles also got a late goal from Paul Dillon.
Mallace gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the 19th minute when he slipped past two SU defenders and tucked a shot underneath the crossbar at the 18:54 mark. It remained a one-goal margin until the 83rd minute when Mallace converted on a penalty kick to put the Golden Eagles ahead by two. A little over four minutes later, Dillon netted his first of the season end any hope of a Syracuse comeback.
The Orange got off to a slow start against the Golden Eagles, attempting only one shot in the first period. But the offense began combining better after the interval resulting in eight shots in the second half, including three in a row at the start of the period.
The equalizer remained within the Orange's grasp until it committed a foul in the goal area with 7:57 to play. Mallace buried the resulting PK to effectively put the match out of reach.
The Golden Eagles held the advantage in shots for the game, 14-9. Marquette also recorded eight corner kicks to five for the Orange.
Junior Nick Roydhouse, sophomore Mark Brode and freshman Brett Jankouskas paced SU with two shots each. Redshirt senior keeper Jeremy Vuolo played the entire match and made three saves.
For Marquette, David Check recorded his sixth shutout of the season. He was not forced to make a save.
Syracuse returns to action with a matinee matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Orange will face Villanova at 3:30 p.m. at the VU Soccer Complex.
Match Notes: Mallace's first goal ended SU's shutout streak against conference opponents at 244:06 … It was the first goal surrendered by the Orange defense to a BIG EAST foe since Oct. 2 at USF … Saturday's loss was the Orange's first in four games against Marquette … SU still owns a 2-1-1 overall lead in the series.
