VILLANOVA, Pa. – Sophomore Mark Brode tallied the Orange's first goal of conference play in Syracuse's 2-1 double-overtime loss to Villanova at the VU Soccer Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Brode's goal was his third of the season and tied the match 1-1 late in the first half. That's how the score remained until 2:50 into the second extra session when Kyle McCarthy notched the winner for the Wildcats off a rebound.
Syracuse is 2-7-5 overall and 0-3-3 in the BIG EAST. Villanova improved to 8-5-2 and 4-1-1 in conference play.
“We were looking for a reaction after the Marquette game and the guys showed some real commitment today,” head coach Ian McIntyre said. “Villanova got on top of the game early, but we tied it before halftime and really probably had the more quality opportunities to win the game in the second half.”
Both sides were aggressive offensively. The direct style of play created an exciting back-and-forth affair that saw Villanova register 17 shots and the Orange take 14.
Kyle Soroka opened the game's scoring with an unassisted goal in the sixth minute to give Villanova the early lead.
Following Soroka's strike, the two sides exchanged offensive forays for the next 38 minutes. Redshirt senior goalie Jeremy Vuolo made four saves during the stretch to keep it a one-goal game. The Orange also forced Villanova goalie Chris Bresnahan to come up with a pair of saves during that time.
The Orange kept up the offensive pressure, and with 1:25 left in the period, Brode finished a cross from sophomore Konrad Andersson to tie the match.
In the second half, both teams had opportunities, but neither side was able to secure the game-winner. Vuolo and Bresnahan each recorded three saves in the second half. Two of Bresnahan's stops came late in regulation as junior #L.J. Papaleo# tested him in the 79th minute and again in the 83rd minute.
Papaleo's attempts were SU's last two shots on goal of the game, setting the stage for McCarthy in the second overtime. After Dylan Renna hit the crossbar, McCarthy cleaned up the rebound at the 102:50 mark to clinch the victory for the hosts.
Vuolo finished with eight saves in the match, one short of his career high. Bresnahan totaled five stops for Villanova to earn the win.
Syracuse returns home on Saturday, Oct. 23 to host Rutgers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Live streaming video of the game will be available on SUathletics.com via Orange All Access.
Match Notes: Andersson's assist was his first point of the season … Wednesday's match was the ninth overtime game played by the Orange this season, tying the school record … SU also played nine OT games in 1990 and 1985.
