Syracuse and #20/20 West Virginia will battle for the Schwartzwalder Trophy on Saturday, October 23 at 12 p.m. The game will be televised live from Mountaineer Field on ESPN2. The series between the Orange (4-2 overall, 1-1 BIG EAST) and the Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0) is one of the oldest and richest rivalries in Syracuse football history. The Schwartzwalder Trophy has gone to the winner of the annual pairing since 1993. Named for Hall of Fame coach Ben Schwartzwalder, who guided the Orange to a 153-91-3 overall record in 25 seasons (1949-73). Schwartzwalder is SU's all-time winningest coach and led the Orange to its only national championship in football in 1959. Schwartzwalder started at center for West Virginia under the great Mountaineers coach Greasey Neale and graduated from WVU in 1933. Syracuse last claimed the Schwartzwalder Trophy when it defeated West Virginia, 24-13, in 2001.
The series against WVU dates back to 1945, with the teams meeting every year since 1955. SU holds the edge in the all-time series, 30-27, but WVU leads in games played in Morgantown, 18-12.
After the pair of road games, the Orange returns to the Carrier Dome to host Louisville on November 6 (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). Tickets are available for the game online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX).
