Syracuse will travel to face Cincinnati in Nippert Stadium on UC's campus on Saturday, October 30 (12:00 p.m., ESPNU). Coming off its first win against a ranked opponent since 2007, Syracuse (5-2, 2-1) is off to its best start since 2001. The Bearcats are 3-4, 1-1.
After defeating #20/19 West Virginia, 19-14, on the road, the Orange received eight votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and three votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The last time Syracuse received votes in the national polls was in 2004, after it upset #17/19 Boston College, 43-17, in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The last time SU was in the Top 25 was at the end of the 2001 season when it ranked 14th in both polls after finishing the season with a 10-3 record and a 26-3 victory against Kansas State in the Insight.com Bowl.
Senior linebacker Doug Hogue earned Defensive Player of the Week honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the BIG EAST Conference for his performance against the Mountaineers. The senior led the Orange defense with 10 tackles, including eight solo stops, 1.5 tackles for a loss of yards, two interceptions and a pass breakup. Hogue and the SU defense held WVU scoreless for the final three quarters of the game.
Freshman placekicker Ross Krautman earned BIG EAST Conference Honor Roll recognition for his four field goal effort.
Syracuse has won three of four road contests (at Akron, at South Florida and at #20/19 West Virginia) in 2010. The last time the Orange won three away games was 2001 (at Rutgers, at Pittsburgh and at Virginia Tech) and the Orange last won four road games in 1997 (against Wisconsin in the Kickoff Classic, at Rutgers, at Pittsburgh and at Miami).
The Orange enters the week with its best record since 2001, its five wins are the most for an SU team since 2004 when the team finished 6-6 and its pair of BIG EAST victories is also the most since the 2004 season, when it finished 4-2 in conference.
The Orange returns to the Carrier Dome to host Louisville on November 6 (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). Tickets are available for the game online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX).
