Orange Loses Heartbreaker to Pittsburgh

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse (21-6, 3-6) dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Pittsburgh (11-14, 5-4) on Friday afternoon in the Women's Building. Senior outside Hayley Todd and junior outside Noemie Lefebvre led the Orange with nine kills apiece while senior libero Sarah Hayes notched a team-best 11 digs.
Todd and Lefebvre were two of eight student-athletes to log two or more kills in the five-set thriller. Sophomore Samantha Hinz added eight digs and a match-best seven blocks while leading the hitters with a .500 attack percentage. Freshman middle Lindsay McCabe and senior right side Mindy Stanislovaitis each added four kills and a pair of blocks while sophomore Laura Homann had three kills and directed the offense with 39 assists. Junior Erin Little had three kills, also hitting .500 in the contest while rookie outside Samantha Clarey added a pair.
Defensively, Hayes 11 digs paced the squad while junior defensive specialist Ashley Williams added 10 back row pickups and Lefebvre had six digs.
Syracuse came out firing as Todd served the Orange to a 9-0 run as it captured the first set, 25-11. Pittsburgh turned the tables in the second set, jumping out to a 22-14 lead before five-straight SU points brought the Orange back into it, 22-19. Syracuse pulled within two, 24-22, but the Panthers secured the vital point to even the match.
The Panthers took a lead in the match with a 25-18 third-set win, but Syracuse came back to win game four, 25-19, forcing a crucial fifth set. Pittsburgh took the match, 3-2, with a 15-10 fifth-set win.
The Orange continues its two-match homestand when it hosts West Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 2 in a Halloween Day matinee at 2 p.m. The match will be streamed live on Orange All Access.
