It's back to the routine for the Orange football team (3-1), who visits South Florida for a noon kickoff Saturday. Coach Doug Marrone has gone out of his way this week to point out the lopsidedness of this five-game series so far.
Behind the scenes, the players are respectful of the fact that they haven't beaten USF, but confident they've closed the gap considerably.
“Turnovers can really set you back. They can lose a game for you,” quarterback Ryan Nassib said. “If we play our game and we minimize turnovers, maybe get a couple of takeaways, we can do very well against this highly talented South Florida team”.
Greg Paulus was intercepted five times by the Bulls in the Carrier Dome last year.
Will the Old Guys Still Have It?: Having an office within the walls of the Manley Field House practice facility means potentially getting drilled by an aggressive linebacker or errant lacrosse ball. However, those risks are outweighed by the daily sights and sounds.
For instance, the men's lacrosse team practiced yesterday in advance of its Saturday run with an impressive roster of alums. Assistant coach Lelan Rogers was gameplanning with his defense. Word is that Paul Carcaterra is equally dedicated as the coach of the Ex-Orange. It's pretty cool to see that both sides are taking it seriously.
Guesses on the final score of the alumni game are across the board. Don't be surprised if the vets take this one with their collection of national champions and pros. And don't blame the current team if they can't handle the attack of Gary Gait and Casey Powell. Mike Springer, Mike Leveille and Kenny Nims are no joke.
All-American goalie Matt Palumb will attempt to slow the young guns. He tipped them off that he might be a little weak stickside-high. “I haven't stopped a shot in 20 years,” Palumb, now a top lax referee, said.
Keep in mind that the youngsters should have better legs. And their coach, John Desko, still has 11 rings.
Saturday's game faces off at 3:00 in the Dome. Tickets are $7. Palumb and his counterpart John Galloway go head-to-head on Orange All Access.
Did You Know?: Starting with a 1990 matchup at #2 Miami, the Orange have played 12 regular season games at Florida schools. A third of those times, the opponent was ranked either first or second in the country. USF (3-1) is unranked.
