NEW YORK – Former Syracuse lacrosse stars Casey Powell and Scott Ditzell were named to the U.S. Men's National Indoor Lacrosse Team on Tuesday, Nov. 16. The duo will represent the United States at the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Prague, Czech Republic next May. The U.S. roster was selected after tryout weekends in Wayne, N.J., Syracuse, N.Y. and Baltimore, Md.
Two Syracuse products were also named to the reserve list. Jarett Park and Steve Panarelli were among 16 players selected as alternates.
"The chance to represent the United States at this elite level is the ultimate honor in lacrosse," said U.S. Indoor Lacrosse President and GM Graham D'Alvia. "I am honored and look forward to the opportunity to further develop this team that will represent our great country in this sport, both on and off the turf."
Ditzell is one of four players on the 2011 roster that helped the U.S. squad to a third-place finish at the 2007 World Indoor Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Erik Miller, Chris Schiller and Matt Zash were also members of the national team the last time around.
Ditzell played two seasons on defense for the Orange and was part of the 2004 national championship team. A 2005 team captain, Ditzell recorded 73 ground balls in his SU career. He currently plays for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League (NLL).
Powell was a four-time All-American at Syracuse (1995-98) and helped lead the Orange to the NCAA title as a freshman in 2005. He racked up 287 points in four seasons and is tied for second with his brother, Ryan, on the school's all-time scoring list.
This past summer, Powell became the first American-born player to win the NLL MVP. He registered 44 goals and 36 assists for the Orlando Titans.
The World Indoor Lacrosse Championship takes place at Telsa Arena in Prague, Czech Republic from May 21-28. Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, England, Finland, Ireland and the Iroquois Nationals will join the United States in the one-week tournament.
