Orange Wins 2010 BIG EAST Championship

STORRS, Conn. – The two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad scored the game's only goal as Syracuse won the 2010 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, shutting out Connecticut 1-0 today at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on the campus of the University of Connecticut. This is the Syracuse's second championship title in the last three years and fifth overall. Syracuse's eighth consecutive win improves to the Orange to 15-4, while the Huskies move to 15-5.
Conrad gave the Orange an early 1-0 lead at the 30:40. The senior took a long pass from fellow All-American Martina Loncarica, spun and beat BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Sarah Mansfield low pad-side.
Conrad, SU's career leader in goals with 46, also ranks on SU's all-time points list with 110. The senior has recorded 16 points off eight goals this season. Loncarica, SU's career leader in assists with 55, also ranks second on SU's all-time points list with 115. The junior has registered a team-best 27 points off a team-high 10 goals and seven assists.
The Orange defense dominated, only allowing two shots and one penalty corner on the afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver tallied one save in her fourth shut-out performance of the year. Syracuse recorded 14 shots and six penalty corners.
Conrad was named the 2010 BIG EAST Champion Most Outstanding Player. Sophomore back Amy Kee, Loncarica, junior forward Heather Susek and Stiver were named to the 2010 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
As winners of the 2010 BIG EAST Championship, the Orange receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship which begins Saturday, November 13.
The 16-team field for the NCAA Field Hockey Championship will be released on Tuesday, November 9 at 8 p.m. NCAA Division I and CBS College Sports have announced that the NCAA Division I Field Hockey selection show will be broadcast on broadband via www.NCAA.com.
