Conrad Provides Heroics as Syracuse Advances to Second Round

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Two-time All-American #Lindsey Conrad# scored seven minutes into overtime as the fourth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team advanced to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory at No. 10 Penn State today at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex on the campus of Penn State. SU's ninth consecutive victory improves its mark to 16-4, while Penn State ends its season 14-6. The Orange will play No. 7 Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Conrad found an opening after a rebound found her stick. The senior spun and fired into the back left-hand side of the cage, cutting a very sharp angle. SU's all-time leading goal scorer with 47 goals also ranks third on SU's all-time points list with 117. Conrad has recorded 18 points off nine goals this season.
The two teams played the majority of the game 10-vs.-10 as junior forward #Nicole Nelson# and Penn State's Kelsey Amy both received red cards at 27:54 mark of the first half. As a result, Nelson will not be available tomorrow.
The Orange responded with a goal off its second penalty corner of the contest. Sophomore back #Iona Holloway# took a pass from sophomore back Amy Kee and beat PSU's keeper low pad-side to give SU a 1-0 advantage with 15:25 remaining in the first half. Holloway has recorded seven points off seven points off three goals and one assist. Kee has registered 14 points off five goal and three assists.
Penn State evened the score at 1-1 with 26:51 left in the game. The Nittany Lions scored off their sixth penalty corner as Daneen Zug tipped home a blast from Hannah Allison.
The Nittany Lions had a penalty corner opportunity as time expired and three in the overtime session, but sophomore goalkeeper #Leann Stiver# and the Orange defense stood strong.
Stiver recorded seven saves for the Orange. Ayla Halus registered 18 saves for Penn State. The Orange outshot the Nittany Lions, 23-13, but PSU held a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.
