SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 8/7 Syracuse (10-0) scored a season-high 100 points and the Orange produced a convincing, 100-43 victory against Colgate (0-8), on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. The 57-point win matches the largest margin of triumph during Coach Jim Boeheim's 35 years at the helm of the program.
Syracuse put on a dominating performance from the opening tip, holding the Raiders scoreless for the first 4:41 of play. With 7:23 left in the opening period, the Orange had constructed a 34-4 advantage. By halftime, the lead was 46-8. It marked the fewest points SU had yielded in a half during Boeheim's tenure as head coach.
The NCAA Division I record for fewest points in a half, a mark tracked since 1986-87, is five.
Syracuse held Colgate to 3-of-28 from the field (.107). At the same time, the Orange was posting its most productive first half of the campaign. Guards Brandon Triche and Dion Waiters each had nine points and Scoop Jardine, another backcourt performer, had eight for the Orange.
Triche got the Orange's offense going again in the second half, hitting the first two buckets for SU. Senior Rick Jackson came alive in the second stanza, scoring 14 of his 18 points. The Orange advantage reached 63 points at one stage before Colgate narrowed the gap in the final minutes.
Waiters joined Jackson in double-figures with a career-high 17 points. Triche finished with 14 and Jardine also netted double-digits with 13. Jackson posted his eighth double-double of the season and 15th of his career with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
All 17 Syracuse players saw action for the first time this season. The Orange received 48 points off the bench. Guard Mookie Jones tallied nine on three 3-pointers and swingman James Southerland contributed seven points and a career-high nine boards.
Syracuse walk-on Matt Lyde-Cajuste scored the first basket of his collegiate tenure and fellow walk-ons Russ DeRemer and Nolan Hart saw their first court time.
In addition to the 48-15 advantage in bench points, Syracuse outscored Colgate in the paint, 44-14. Fast break points were in Syracuse's favor, 31-2.
Joe Hoban led Colgate with 14 points. Nick Pascale, who played with Triche at Jamesville-DeWitt High School, had six points, four rebounds and two blocks.
It marked the 163rd meeting between the two schools and Syracuse extended the longest active win streak in a series in Division I to 45. Colgate is Syracuse's most familiar foe.
