ERIE, Pa. – Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel recorded a season-high 45 saves, while junior forward Stefanie Marty scored her first goal since returning from the 2010 Winter Games, but it was not enough as the Syracuse University ice hockey team (17-16-1, 8-8-0 CHA) was defeated by No. 1 Mercyhurst (27-2-3, 14-1-1 CHA), 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in its regular season finale. After being swept by the Lakers, the Orange finishes third in the College Hockey America (CHA) standings in just its second year of existance.
Mercyhurst came out aggressive, accounting for the game's first three penalties. After Jess Jones and Samantha Watt's penalties occurred just 29 seconds apart, the Orange held a 5-on-3 advantage and Marty put in the Orange goal at the 12:06 mark. Senior blueliner Gabrielle Beaudry was credited with an assist for her third consecutive game, while freshman forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe also continued her point-scoring streak to three games.
Schoedel, who was faced with 18 shots in the second period, helped Syracuse hold onto its lead before surrendering one goal to Pamela Zgoda in the final minute to tie things up. The Lakers held of the Orange by allowing just two shots on goal in the period.
SU continued to be outshot, 16-3, in the third, but Schoedel continued to impress in the net by allowing just two MC goals in a penalty-less final period. Jess Jones put the first one in at 11:13, while Melissa Lacroix scored the empty-netter to give the Lakers a two-goal cushion at 19:44.
Mercyhurst's Hillary Pattenden finished with 12 saves.
Both teams will travel to the CHA Tournament on Thurs., March 4. The Orange will face off against Niagara in the semifinals game on Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m. The conference tournament will be hosted by Wayne State University.
