Morrow Leads SU to BIG EAST Tournament Win

HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Erica Morrow scored 18 points to lead Syracuse to a come-from-behind 65-42 victory against Seton Hall in the first round of the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament in Hartford, Conn., on Friday, March 5. The Orange, the tournament's ninth seed, improves to 21-9 on the season while Seton Hall goes to 9-11. Syracuse advances to the second round where it meets No. 8 seed Providence on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The win is the Orange's first in the BIG EAST Tournament since 2005 and the first for third-year Syracuse head coach Quentin Hillsman.
The Orange jumped out to an early lead, building a 6-1 advantage in the first three minutes of the game. Ebonie Williams hit a three-pointer for Seton Hall's first field goal of the game and sparked the Pirates on a 23-5 scoring run that gave them a 24-11 advantage with 9:42 left in the half. The Orange responded with a run of its own, outscoring Seton Hall, 16-1, during a span of nearly eight minutes and took a 27-25 lead on asha Harris three-pointer with 1:55 left on the clock. The Pirates' Terry Green recorded the final field goal of the first half, a three-pointer with 1:19 remaining to give Seton Hall a 28-27 halftime lead.
Syracuse took control of the game midway through the second half. With the score tied, 36-36, Morrow converted two free throw attempts with 13:13 remaining to give Syracuse the lead for good, and senior Juanita Ward cored six consecutive points to increase SU's lead to 44-36. Following a Seton Hall field goal, the Orange went on a 9-0 scoring run, which included six consecutive points for Morrow. Green halted SU's run with a layup with 7:01 on the clock, cutting the lead to 53-40. The Orange did not allow another Seton Hall field goal until the 1:41 mark as it pulled away for the 65-42 final.
Morrow led all scorers with 18 points to go along with five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Ward had 16 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Carmen Tyson-Thomas tied her career high with 13 rebounds, helping Syracuse outrebound Seton Hall, 58-35. Kandice Green led Seton Hall with 12 points.
The Orange was playing without its leading scorer and rebounder, senior Nicole Michael. Michael missed the game due to a foot injury she suffered in Syracuse's regular-season finale against West Virginia.
Syracuse will take on Providence for the second time this season on Saturday. The Friars defeated the Orange, 71-69, on January 19 in Providence.
