Sporting News has named Syracuse's Jim Boeheim as its national coach of the year. Boeheim has guided the Orange to a 28-3 overall record, the BIG EAST Conference regular-season championship and a ranking that reached the top spot in both national polls.
Boeheim began the season with another milestone -- Syracuse's victory against Albany in the campaign opener represented the 800th win in his coaching career. As Boeheim now prepares his club for the BIG EAST Conference Tournament, he ranks sixth on the all-time Division I Coaches Win list with 827. Among active coaches, only Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (859) has more.
The 28 wins accumulated by this year's squad represent the most regular-season triumphs in school history. Syracuse has a 7-0 record against nationally-ranked foes in 2009-10.
The winningest coach in BIG EAST Conference history with a 371-203 overall record, Boeheim is also the only court boss who has been with the league since its inception.
Boeheim's Syracuse club's have posted 20-win seasons on 32 occasions, another NCAA Division I record. He's guided the Orange into the postseason 32 times in 33 previous seasons, including 26 NCAA Tournaments. Boeheim has 42 NCAA Tournament victories, which places him in an eighth-place tie with retired Louisville coach Denny Crum.
Syracuse won the NCAA Championship in 2003 and also reached the NCAA title game behind Boeheim's guidance in 1987 and 1996.
The 2009-10 conference title is the second outright league regular-season championship for Boeheim at Syracuse. The Orange shared the conference championship on seven other occasions.
