Associated Press Selects Boeheim Coach of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS - Jim Boeheim is The Associated Press' college basketball coach of the year.

His Syracuse team was unranked in the preseason and rose to No.1 during the course of the campaign.

Boeheim received 38 votes from the 65-member national media panel, well ahead of Kansas State's Frank Martin, who had eight.

The Orange, who lost their top three scorers from last season, finished 30-5 and were a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. They reached No. 1 in the poll this season for the first time since 1990. Syracuse captured the BIG EAST Conference regular-season crown with a 15-3 league mark.

The Hall of Fame coach holds the Division I record with 32 20-win seasons, and his 829 victories are sixth-best all-time and second among active coaches. He completed his 34th season as a head coach, all at his alma mater, by guiding the Orange into the NCAA Tournament for the 27th time.

Boeheim was honored earlier by the United States Basketball Writers Association, Sporting News, FoxSports.com and Yahoo!Sports as coach of the year. He was also named BIG EAST Coach of the Year in 2010.
