SEATTLE – The Syracuse University men and women's rowing teams finished second in three events and third in another today at the Windermere Cup, hosted by the University of Washington on Montlake Cut.
An estimated 40,000 fans watched as the Huskies swept all four races in the 24th annual Windermere Cup. In the Windermere Cup title races (varsity eight), the top-ranked UW men and seventh-ranked women bested Syracuse and Oxford, the storied program from England.
The UW men varsity eight boat found its base rhythm in the middle part of the race before clicking into another gear in the last 500 meters. As the bow ball crossed the finish line in a time of 5:39.599. The Huskies raced out to a lead of several seats over Oxford and Syracuse, before pulling away from the pair at the 1,000-meter mark. The Orange crossed the line in a time of 5:49.309, two seconds before Oxford.
“It was a good day. I think we did some of our best racing of the year so far. It's tough to say that when you lose, but Washington is the top-ranked crew in the country for a reason,” head men's coach Dave Reischman said. “Both crews executed the way we wanted to in a crazy environment you don't see anywhere else in collegiate rowing.”
The UW women varsity eight crossed the finish line with a time of 6:27.514, almost 17 seconds ahead of second-place Syracuse. The Orange crossed the line in a time of 6:44.032, 10 seconds ahead of Oxford.
“I think this was a great experience for the athletes. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity they will never forget, said head women's coach Kris Sanford. “Both boats raced really well and built upon what we did last week at the BIG EAST Championship.”
Both UW teams won the Erickson Cascade Cup races (second varsity eight) as well. The UW men crossed the finish line in a time of 5:41.997. The SU second varsity eight was second in a time of 5:50.111, 19 seconds better than Oxford. The UW women crossed the finish line with a time of 6:35.300. SU placed third, finishing in 7:01.600.
The men and women must now prepare for the Eastern Sprints in Camden, N.J. on Sunday, May 16.
