SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Ten Syracuse players were rewarded with All-America honors by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Thursday, May 27. The Orange's 10 All-America selections were the most of any Division I school and the most honorees for the program since 2000.
Juniors Joel White, John Lade and John Galloway highlighted the group by being named to the first team. Syracuse's three first-team choices led all schools and marked the first time since 2002 the Orange placed three players on the USILA's top squad.
In addition to SU's trio of first-team selections, junior Jeremy Thompson earned second-team honors, and senior Chris Daniello, junior Jovan Miller and senior Matt Tierney were named to the third team. The honorable mention category featured senior Cody Jamieson, junior Stephen Keogh and junior Josh Amidon to round out the group of Orange honorees.
Syracuse leads the nation in scoring defense and that effort was recognized by the USILA as White (longstick midfield), Lade (close defense) and Galloway (goalie) earned top billing. The trio contributed to a unit that held 13 of its 15 opponents to less than 10 goals and posted an overall goals-against average of less than 8.0 for the third straight year (7.31).
White is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy as national player of the year. He led the Orange in ground balls (78) and caused turnovers (31), while tallying six goals and four assists. It's White's second consecutive All-America nod after he earned honorable mention plaudits in 2009.
Like White, Lade was an honorable mention selection in 2009 before making the jump to the first team this year. Lade appeared in 12 games in 2010 and ranked second on the team to White with 22 caused turnovers. Lade also collected 32 ground balls, while usually marking the opposing team's top attackman.
Galloway became just the third goalie in school history to receive first-team All-America recognition and the first since Lynn “Hard” Wood in 1925. The BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, Galloway leads the nation and broke his own school record for season goals-against average with a mark 7.16 in 2010. He also ranks second nationally with a .595 save percentage. Galloway totaled 144 saves on the year, including a season-best 18 at Virginia on March 7.
Thompson scored 15 goals and passed out eight assists as a member of the Orange's first midfield. He also won 58.2 percent of his faceoffs, going 78-for-134 at the X. Thompson was the only player in the BIG EAST to be named to the all-conference first and second teams. He earned first-team recognition as the league's top specialty player and second-team honors as an at-large selection.
Daniello was voted the 2010 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and led the Orange in points (53) and assists (25). He tied for second on the club with 28 goals. Against Rutgers on April 18, Daniello led the Orange with a career-best six points (4g, 2a). He also scored one of the most memorable goals of the year, finding the cage with less than a second to play at Cornell on April 13 to lift the Orange to an 8-7 victory.
Miller contributed 21 points, including 15 goals, from his spot on the first midfield. He was also second on the team with 48 ground balls. Miller scored at least once in 11 of the team's 15 contests and collected a career-high nine ground balls against Army during the regular season.
Tierney started all 15 games for the Orange at close defense and scooped up 31 ground balls, while causing 15 turnovers. He combined with White, Lade and Galloway to form the nucleus of the team's top-rated defense.
Jamieson and Keogh were a potent one-two punch on attack. The duo produced 59 goals and 77 total points. For Keogh, it's the second straight year he's received honorable mention All-America honors. He led the Orange with 31 goals in 2010, including the 100th of his career in SU's NCAA Tournament loss to Army.
Playing in his first full season with the Orange, Jamieson was second on the team with 41 points, including 28 goals.
Amidon proved to be the team's top scoring midfielder in 2010. He finished with 27 points on 14 goals and 13 assists.
Syracuse finished the season with a 13-2 overall record and claimed the inaugural BIG EAST regular-season title. The Orange saw its 2010 campaign come to a close in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 9-8 loss in double overtime to Army.
