Former Syracuse defensive lineman Arthur Jones has agreed to a three-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. The two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection was a fifth-round pick of the Ravens in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Jones is the first 2010 draft choice of the Ravens to sign with the club.
He had a solid collegiate career at Syracuse and developed into a dominating defensive lineman during his tenure. Jones earned four varsity letters with the Orange and started 32 of the 44 games he played in. He accumulated 145 total tackles in his tenure and posted 38.5 tackles-for-loss, the best mark by an SU interior lineman.
A 2009 team captain, Jones earned All-BIG EAST Conference First Team honors as a senior. He started the first nine games before missing the final three outings with a knee injury.
He was a first-team All-BIG EAST Conference selection in 2008. Perhaps the best game of his career came that season when Jones registered a career-high 15 tackles, including four tackles for loss and 1.5 quarterback sacks in a 24-23 win at Notre Dame.
He earned his degree in communication and rhetorical studies.
Jones played football at Union Endicott High School. His younger brother, Chandler, is a defensive end on the current Syracuse squad. His other brother, Jon, is a UFC fighter who goes by the nickmane "Bones Jones."
The Ravens are scheduled to open the preseason portion of their schedule on August 12 against the Carolina Panthers. The regular-season opener is at the New York Jets on Monday, September 13. Baltimore upset New England, 33-14, in the 2010 AFC Wild-Card Play-off game before losing to Indianapolis in the AFC Divisional Playoff game, 20-3.
