Syracuse All-Americans Mike Leveille '08 and Ryan Powell '00 helped propel Team USA into the semifinals at the 2010 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Manchester, England. Leveille notched 14 points, including 10 goals, in the preliminary round. Powell, a team co-captain, totaled 12 points on six goals and six assists.
The Americans finished 4-1 in Blue Division pool play and was dominant in its victories. The U.S. outscored Australia, Germany, England and Japan by an average of 15 goals per game and routed the four nations by the cumulative score of 79-19. But it was a different story against Canada as the defending world champs knocked off the Americans, 10-9, on July 17 to hand the U.S. its first-ever preliminary-round loss.
Leveille was the U.S. team's only multi-goal scorer against Team Canada, finding the cage twice. He also paced the American side with five points (3g, 2a) in a 19-5 pasting of Japan on July 20. Powell's best game of the tournament was a six-point (3g, 3a) showing in the team's 22-4 rout of Germany on July 18.
By virtue of its second-place finish in the Blue Division, the U.S. received a bye into the semifinals. Canada won the division, posting a perfect 5-0 mark. They also received a bye into the semis. The two teams will learn their next opponents after Wednesday's quarterfinals.
No matter who they face in the semifinals, both Canada and the U.S. are expected to advance to the world championship game on Saturday in what would be a rematch of the 2006 final won by Canada, 15-10.
