The 2010 football Orange are one week away from the opening of pre-season camp under second-year head coach Doug Marrone. The squad will return to campus on Sunday, August 8 and begin practice on Monday, August 9. Marrone assumed the role of offensive coordinator after his first season and hired Nathaniel Hackett to mentor the quarterbacks and the SU passing game. Throughout Spring practice Marrone and Hackett split the play calling duties. For the 2010 campaign, Hackett will call the plays.
"I have said a number of times that my concern is game mangement," Marrone said. "When you call the plays, you have an ego in terms of confidence in your play call to succeed and you are making the decision on emotion. In addition, you do not have a perspective of game management in terms of the defense and special teams and how they are playing. I was willing to call the plays if I had to, but we have a coach in Nathaniel who can do it. We developed this during Spring practice. I am still going to be involved in game planning with the entire offenive staff."
The Orange kick off the 2010 season on September 4 at Akron (6:00 p.m., ESPN3). SU opens at home against Maine on September 18 at 7:15 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Tickets are available online and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOME-TIX). Season tickets start at $100.
Throughout the off-season Marrone has focused on developing the student-athletes on and off the field through strength and conditioning, leadership, community engagement and Life Skills.
"There will be a toughness about this team in terms of how we prepare and how we play," Marrone said. "We will be a smart football team that plays with discipline and toughness. We have built a lot of positive momentum thoughout the summer."
Marrone said that defensive end Jared Kimmel, tight end Cody Catalina and fullback Carl Cutler will not play in 2010 due to injury.
