During the first scrimmage of 2010 preseason camp Syracuse's young running backs and linebackers made a strong impression. Freshmen tailbacks Prince-Tyson Gulley, Steve Rene and Jerome Smith each displayed speed, an ability to break tackles and to find the hole.
"Our young backs ran hard today," said head coach Doug Marrone. "They did a nice job."
The trio is running behind veterans Delone Carter and Antwon Bailey, who both ran well behind a solid interior offensive line made up of redshirt senior center Ryan Bartholomew and guards Justin Pugh and Adam Rosner.
"Bart played well today," Marrone said of Bartholomew, who moved from guard to center for the upcoming season. "And, Justin Pugh has had a really good camp."
Rene and Gulley also worked as punt returners during the scrimmage.
On the defensive side of the ball, new linebackers Marquis Spruill, Malcolm Cater, Brice Hawkes, Lewellyn Coker and Mario Tull worked to make a case for playing time. Spruil earned a chance to play with the first and second units at outside linebacker, while Cater played middle linebacker with the second group.
"Defensively the young linebackers did a nice job today," Marrone said.
