With the conclusion of preseason camp, the Orange shifts its focus toward preparation for the 2010 campaign and the season-opener at Akron on Saturday, September 4 (6:00 p.m., ESPN3).
“The effort, the enthusiasm, body language and mental toughness is really what we're looking for.,” said head coach Doug Marrone. “The installation is in. We're looking for the weaknesses in the schemes that we're running to identify them and make sure we're working on it. Then teaching the players exactly what we want in terms of, a burst, a finish and the little things that get you beat. We're really working from the ground up as far as the foundation and really harping on what needs to get done. It is important because we do have a lot of new players on this team so we're making sure they know exactly how we practice knowing that it will carry over into the game.”
The Orange will make its first trip to Akron to square off against the Zips for the third time in as many seasons. SU beat Akron last season, 28-14, in the Carrier Dome on October 24.
In the second week of the season Syracuse will visit the west coast for the first time since 1973 when it travels 2,742 miles to face off against Washington. The teams last met in the season opener at the Dome in 2007.
The Orange kicks off its six-game home schedule against Maine on September 18 at 7:15 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Tickets are available online (click here) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOME-TIX). starting at $100. The teams first met last season in the Dome with SU emerging victorious, 41-24.
Additionally, SU will revisit two long-time opponents in 2010 when it hosts Colgate and former BIG EAST rival Boston College in the Dome. SU and Colgate will meet for the first time since 1987 on September 25 (3:30 p.m., ESPN3). The Raiders hold a 29-31-5 edge in the all-time series, but Syracuse has earned the win in the last 14 meetings between the two squads.
In the regular-season finale, the Orange and the Eagles will meet for the first time since Boston College joined the ACC in 2005. Syracuse holds a 28-17 edge in the all-time series with BC, dating back to 1924. In the most recent meeting, SU defeated Boston College, 43-17, in Chestnut Hill, Mass., in 2004.
