Orange Upends Fairfield

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Syracuse (1-0) opened the 2010 season with a 3-1 win against Fairfield in the opening round of the Colgate Classic. Senior right side hitter Mindy Stanislovaitis led the Orange offensively with 11 kills while senior defensive specialist Sarah Hayes notched a team-best five digs.
SU hit .333 as a team with 51 kills through the four set match, with seven different players contributing on offense. Syracuse also reasserted its status as one of the nation's best blocking teams, outblocking the Stags, 12-2. Stanislovaitis led the hitters, posting a blistering .529 hitting percentage while adding three block assists. Junior Noemie Lefebvre added 10 kills while senior Hayley Todd paired nine kills with five assists. Sophomore middle blocker Samantha Hinz had six kills and four service aces while freshman Lindsay McCabe had six kills and eight total blocks in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Laura Homann directed the Orange attack, dishing out 31 assists while adding eight kills.
In the back row, Hayes led the trio of defensive specialists while junior libero Ashley Williams and sophomore Zoe Guzman had four kills apiece.
The Orange struggled to find its rhythm early, dropping the first set, 23-25, before rattling off a trio of victories, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-19, to claim the season opening win.
Syracuse resumes Colgate Classic play tomorrow with matches against Rhode Island and Colgate at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
