The BIG EAST has released the names of more than 3,100 student-athletes that received All-Academic honors for the 2009-10 academic year. Among the names were 226 Syracuse student-athletes across 15 sports. SU was one of seven conference schools to have more than 200 individual honorees. To be named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Teams, the student-athlete must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher throughout the year and earn a varsity letter in a sport sponsored by the conference.
The Orange had the most All-Academic selections in the conference in two sports – men's cross country/ track & field and field hockey. The men's cross country/track & field team had 30 honorees, tying with Villanova for the conference lead while field hockey's 17 tied with Louisville.
Individually, Syracuse had 23 student-athletes named to the team in each of their four years on campus. The women's rowing team led the way with seven four-time honorees: Heidi Bulk, Christine DePompeo, Kathryn Lynch, Chelsea MacPherson, Anne Van Houten, Ildiko Toth and Lydia Wong. Three teams – women's lacrosse, women's cross country/track & field and volleyball – each had a trio of four-time honorees. Jackie DePetris, Christina Dove and Eileen Finn represented women's lacrosse, Maegan Krifchin, Melissa Romero and Nana Sang-Bender represented cross country/track & field and Kacie MacTavish, Sarah Morton and Annabelle Pellerin from volleyball. The other four-time honorees were: Pete Hill and Elliott Townsend from men's soccer; Curtis Bixler and Dan Busby from men's cross country/track & field; Tracy Dietrick from field hockey; Tessa MacDougall from women's soccer and Chelsea Jones from tennis.
In addition, 14 members of the Orange football squad earned 2009 BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors as announced in February. Complete release can be found here.
