ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior Nick Roydhouse made a triumphant return to Hartwick's Elmore Field on Friday, Sept. 10. He scored 5:32 into overtime to lift the Orange to a 1-0 victory against Northeastern (0-3-0) in the opening match of Mayor's Cup XXXV. It was the first win of the season for Syracuse (1-2-0) and the first triumph for Ian McIntyre as head coach of the Orange after spending seven seasons as the head coach at Hartwick.
"Obviously, it was special to get it at Elmore Field," McIntyre said of his first SU victory. "But honestly, we would have taken it no matter where we played. It was great for the collective spirit of the group."
Roydhouse, who played 36 matches for the Hawks in 2008 and 2009 before following McIntyre to Syracuse, netted the match-winner on a direct kick from 22 yards out in the 96 minute. The goal came on the Orange's third shot of the game and its first of the overtime period.
"Nick did a great job of getting the ball up and over the wall," McIntyre said. "It caught the goalkeeper a little flat-footed and there was really no way he could get to it. It was a great restart strike."
For McIntyre, the victory added to his already impressive Elmore Field record. He is now 70-16-12 in his career at the facility, including his four years as a Hartwick player and his 11 previous seasons as the head coach at both Hartwick and Oneonta State.
Redshirt senior goalie Jeremy Vuolo, another Hartwick transfer, made one save in 50:32 to earn the win Friday. He combined with redshirt sophomore Ryan Jones to record the team's first clean sheet of the year. Jones played the game's first 45 minutes.
The victory certainly wasn't easy. The Orange was outshot in the match, 17-3, including a 9-1 margin in the opening period. Jones received his first start of the season and recorded four saves in the opening half to help keep the game scoreless.
In the second half, it was Vuolo who withstood the Husky barrage. He was also the beneficiary of some Elmore Field magic. With Northeastern pressing for the go-ahead goal, Don Anding hit the goalpost twice in the span of two minutes midway through the second half. The Huskies didn't score and it set the stage for Roydhouse's first Syracuse goal.
Despite the statistics, McIntyre was pleased with the way the Orange defended. He praised redshirt sophomore back David Neumann and senior back Daniel McGowan for their performances. Particularly McGowan, who was thrust into action early in the match after freshman Robbie Hughes left the game with an injury.
"Northeastern is probably the best team we've faced," McIntyre said. "Defensively, we got our bodies in the way and really showed a lot of grit and determination."
Anding led the Northeastern offense with six shots. Michael Kennedy recorded four and put three on goal. He was stopped twice by Jones on chances in the first half.
Northeastern goalie Oliver Blum did not make a save and was credited with the loss.
Syracuse wraps up competition at the Mayor's Cup on Sunday, Sept. 12 against Columbia. Kickoff for the match is set for 12 p.m. at Elmore Field.
