ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team (1-3-0) wrapped up play at Mayor's Cup XXXV on Sunday, Sept. 12 with a 2-0 loss to tournament champion Columbia at Hartwick's Elmore Field. The Lions (1-2-1) scored once in each half to pick up their first win of the season.
Columbia was the only undefeated team in the tournament, going 1-0-1 on the weekend to claim the Mayor's Cup XXXV title. The Orange finished second with a 1-1-0 mark. Northeastern (1-1-0) was third and Hartwick (0-2-0) placed fourth. Syracuse won the second-place tiebreaker by virtue of its head-to-head win over Northeastern Friday.

On Sunday, the Orange outshot Columbia, 6-4, in the second half. It also recorded five corner kicks in the match to none for the Lions, but couldn't capitalize on its opportunities.
“I thought we started very well,” SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. “We were on top of the game early and then conceded a little bit of a soft goal. We played well in patches and created some chances, but ultimately, we want to put more pressure on the opposing goalkeeper.”
Syracuse did apply some pressure early. The Orange recorded three of the game's first four shots, but it was Columbia that struck first. Henning Sauerbier scored off a pass from Hayden Johns in the 21st minute to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
In the second period, Syracuse pushed forward for the equalizer. But the Orange put only one of its six second-half shot attempts on goal. The rest missed the target and Columbia's Bayo Adafin found the net with 8:02 to play to put the game away.
Senior redshirt goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo made two saves in the match for Syracuse. His counterpart, Alexander Aurrichio, finished with three saves for Columbia to earn the shutout.
Junior Nick Roydhouse and sophomore Mark Brode combined for seven of the Orange's 10 shots in the contest. Roydhouse led the way with four. Brode registered three, putting one on goal.
Roydhouse, who scored the game-winning goal against Northeastern in overtime Friday, was named to the all-tournament team. He was joined on the squad by Brode and sophomore back Jakob Karlgren.
Columbia's Nick Scott, who assisted on Adafin's goal, earned the tournament's Jim Lennox Offensive MVP Award. Aurrichio was named the tournament's Garth Stam Defensive MVP.
The Orange returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 when it takes on Patriot League foe American for the first time. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Reeves Field in Washington, D.C.
Match Notes: Freshman Brett Jankouskas received his first career start Sunday … Syracuse has never beaten Columbia … The Orange is 0-3-0 all-time against the Lions.
