SYRACUSE – The Syracuse University men's rowing program announced its schedule for the 2011 spring season. The Orange will compete in four dual races, the Eastern Sprints and IRA Regatta. SU opens the spring season on April 2 in Princeton, N.J. against Princeton and Georgetown.
Syracuse then travels to Ithaca, N.J. for the Goes Trophy against Cornell and Navy on April 16. The Orange hosts the first of two events on April 26 when SU battles Boston and Columbia for the Conlan Cup. Syracuse takes two weeks off before traveling to Worcester, Mass. for the Eastern Sprints on May 15. The Orange hosts the final dual race of the year against Dartmouth for the Packard Cup on May 22. The 2011 season concludes at the IRA Regatta on June 2-4.
Clifford “Tip” Goes, Syracuse Class of 1914 created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the three schools. Goes coxswained the varsity eight which won the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in 1913. He had a lifelong passion in rowing and served as chairman of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Committee. Cornell as won the last two Goes Trophies.
Syracuse and Boston have been racing for the Conlan Cup every year since 1987, when the trophy was first created. The Orange has won the cup 13 times in 24 years. Syracuse has won five consecutive and nine of the last 12 Conlan Cups.
After traveling to Worchester, Mass. for the Eastern Sprints, Syracuse will host the Dartmouth in the race for the Packard Cup.
Anthony Ladd commissioned the Packard Cup in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward N. Packard (SU class of 1906). The sterling silver cup is awarded annually to the winner of the Syracuse-Dartmouth race. Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first SU crew to capture an IRA championship. Dartmouth won the cup last season, snapping a string of four consecutive wins for the Orange.
Syracuse ends the season at the IRA Regatta on June 2-4. Syracuse concluded the 2010 season by recording three top-10 finishes, including a sixth-place finish in the varsity eight and a seventh-place showing in the second varsity eight at the 108th Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J. The Orange finished seventh in the Ten Eyck Team Championship with 119 points, which is its highest finish under Head Coach Dave Reischman's tenure.
SU opens the fall season at the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. on October 24.
