SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team (1-4-3) extended its unbeaten streak to three games on Tuesday, Sept. 28 with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Canisius (0-5-1) at the SU Soccer Stadium.
It was the third straight tie for Syracuse and the fifth overtime game for the Orange in eight outings this season.
Junior Nick Roydhouse tallied the only goal of the match for Syracuse. He has the team's last four goals dating back to the Orange's 1-0 defeat of Northeastern on Sept. 10.
Canisius opened the game's scoring in the 25th minute when J.J. Hughes knocked in his own his rebound after a save by SU redshirt senior Jeremy Vuolo. But Syracuse responded less than 13 minutes later when Roydhouse bent a free kick from 30 yards out over the out-stretched arm of Canisius keeper Kareem Gray to tie the match at 1-1.
In the second half, Syracuse was the more dangerous team and outshot the Golden Griffins, 8-5, in the period. However the team couldn't convert on its opportunities and the game went into extra time.
Sam Guibert of Canisius recorded the only two shots of the first overtime. His first attempt was denied by Vuolo in the 96th minute, and the second sailed over the Syracuse goal with five seconds left in the session.
It was Syracuse's turn to be the aggressor in the second overtime as the Orange outshot the Golden Griffins, 6-2, for the period. The Orange kept steady pressure on the Canisius defense and forced Gray to make three saves in the session.
The Orange's best chances to clinch the victory came early in the second OT when Gray scrambled to stop a Roydhouse drive. The ball rebounded to junior Fredrik Forsman whose shot at an empty net from near the six was blocked. Redshirt sophomore David Neumann had a follow-up chance, but his shot sailed high.
Two minutes later, a shot by junior Federico Agreda off a deflected corner kick just missed the net and Canisius held on the rest of the way for the draw.
Vuolo registered nine saves for the third straight game for the Orange, matching his career high. Gray also finished with nine stops for Canisius.
The two teams combined for 39 shots in the match with the Orange outshooting the Golden Griffins, 20-19. Syracuse also held the advantage in corner kicks, 12-3.
The Orange is in action again on Saturday, Oct.2 when it visits USF for its first BIG EAST road match of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the USF Soccer Stadium.
Match Notes: Syracuse is 8-0-1 all-time against Canisius … Sophomore Konrad Andersson and senior Manny Sevillano made their first starts of the season Tuesday … SU's five overtime games is already three more than all of last season … The Orange's three-game unbeaten streak is the longest since the start of the 2008 season when it began the year 4-0-2.
