TAMPA, Fla. – Syracuse's three-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday, Oct. 2 at USF. The Orange (1-5-3, 0-1-1) lost a 4-0 decision to the Bulls (6-2-1, 1-1-0) in front of 256 fans at the USF Soccer Stadium. It was the first loss for the Orange since Sept. 18.
The Orange entered Saturday's contest having tied its last three games and looking for its first BIG EAST win. Instead the Bulls scored three times in the final 12:30 to earn their first conference victory of the season.
USF's Hasani Sinclair registered two goals, scoring once in each half. Santi Alexis and Andre Mittoo also produced goals for the Bulls.
Sinclair opened the game's scoring in the 20th minute. He collected a loose ball in the box and tallied his first goal of the year to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
That was the score until late in the second half as the Orange played steady soccer to remain within striking distance. But with 12:30 left in regulation Sinclair was taken down in the box by SU redshirt senior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo. The foul resulted in a penalty kick for Sinclair and a red card for Vuolo. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Jones replaced Vuolo in goal, but to no avail. Sinclair converted the penalty kick to extend the USF margin to 2-0.
Less than five minutes later, Alexis scored to push the hosts' lead to 3-0 and Mittoo tacked on the Bulls' fourth goal in the 85th minute to produce the final score.
Junior Nick Roydhouse led the Orange offense, attempting three of the team's four shots in the contest. He put two on goal.
Vuolo recorded three saves in 77:30 for the Orange before leaving the game. Jones allowed USF's last three goals and did not make a save. For USF, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella turned aside a pair of shots to earn the victory and his sixth shutout of the season.
USF held the advantage in shots for the match, 12-4. The Orange owned a 5-2 edge in corner kicks with four coming in the second half.
Syracuse returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The Orange will wrap up non-conference play with a 7 p.m. match against Central New York neighbor Colgate at the SU Soccer Stadium. The game will be streamed live on SUathletics.com via Orange All Access.
Match Notes: The home team has won four of the six games in the series between Syracuse and USF … With his three saves against the Bulls, Vuolo increased his career saves total to 250 in 62 matches.
