So, it's the first and only bye week of the Orange football season. The expression “week off” is a bit of a misnomer as much of the regular routine still takes place.
Head coach Doug Marrone required a 7:00 a.m. breakfast check-in Sunday with the goal of getting the players treated and the Colgate win shelved as soon as possible. A few players were seen headed back to their South Campus apartments around noon.
Monday, nobody was required to report. Tuesday and Wednesday were lighter “run and lift” days. The first three days of the work week provided an opportunity to make sure the players' academics are in order and minor bruises are healed. (A scan of Twitter might reveal that some players may have gotten their football fix through a little bit of Madden.)
Marrone said he and his staff will spend the second half of the week on self scouting. “We'll look at some things, break some tendencies… and work on some fundamentals before getting into the South Florida game plan,” he said.
Speaking of Schedules: Colgate, who didn't play 9/18, was the first of five teams that will have extra time to prepare to play the Orange. Cincinnati, Connecticut, Rutgers and West Virginia all come off Thursday or Friday television specials before the Syracuse game.
Prolific Carter: Delone Carter had, statistically, the best game of his career Saturday. On just 14 carries, he ran for 172 yards and touchdowns of 24, 9, 12 and 18 yards. Half of his touches were for 12 yards or more. That's after his first two rushes were for just a yard each.
“I run hard every time I get the ball,” the redshirt senior said. “I knew it was going to open and it did, eventually.”
Carter now ranks 10th on the career rushing touchdowns list with 20. He has two games with four apiece (last week vs. Colgate and 9/30/06 vs. Wyoming) and two others with three (9/26/09 vs. Maine and 10/24/09 vs. Akron).
When Delone's good, he's very good. He's scored 21 career touchdowns, 15 of them (71%) in those four games, all home wins. The only player in school history to score two dozen or more points in a game is College and Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Floyd Little.
Next to pass on the list of touchdown makers, current wide receivers coach Rob Moore, who is 12th with 22.
Trivia Question: Among former Syracuse players, who has scored the most points in the NFL this season?
Did You Know?: Syracuse is the only conference school to have a Big East Player of the Week in offense (Ryan Nassib wk. 1, Carter wk. 4), defense (Mike Holmes wk. 1) and special teams (Holmes, wk. 3).
Now (or Soon) on Orange All Access:
· Football DT Andrew Lewis said after a recent interview that he wanted to be on the other side of the microphone. We called his bluff.
· Olympic sport webcasts are in full swing. This week alone: women's soccer (Sunday vs. Connecticut), men's soccer (last night vs. Canisius), volleyball (tonight vs. Binghamton) and ice hockey (season opener Friday vs. Northeastern).
Marrone Mondays: Coach Marrone's weekly luncheon will NOT occur 10/4 due to the bye week, but will be back 10/11. We'll see you at P.J.'s Pub in Armory Square at noon. Several lunch choices and a beverage are included for $8.99 as Marrone updates fans on the team and takes questions.

Trivia Answer: Seahawks kicker Olindo Mare. He's 25th with 18 points through three games. With three more this year, Mare's made 19 straight field goals since his only two misses of 2009 came in the same early-season game.
