Adelphi Downs Orange On Penalty Kick

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team (0-2) stood tall against defending Atlantic Soccer Conference champion Adelphi (2-0) for more than 100 minutes on Saturday, Sept. 4. But Alexander Kouznetsov spoiled the Orange's effort, converting a penalty kick 52 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Panthers to a 1-0 victory at Motamed Field.
The penalty kick was Adelphi's second of the game and was awarded to Kouznetsov after a foul and yellow card was issued to freshman defender Robbie Hughes. Redshirt senior goalie Jeremy Vuolo denied the Panthers' first penalty kick of the match in 87th minute, coming up with a save on Issa Tall's attempt to help force extra time. However, Vuolo couldn't get to Kouznetsov's shot and the Panthers emerged victorious.
“Ultimately, the result was a disappointment,” said head coach Ian McIntyre. “All the players worked their socks off and their performance was worthy of at least a tie. I'm proud of how hard they played and this game is a good foundation on which to build.”
The Orange generated only three shots in the contest, but the play of Vuolo kept Syracuse in it. He made six saves Saturday, including two in the first overtime, to help keep the game scoreless.
Junior Chris Saul paced the Orange with two shots, including one on goal in the first half. Hughes also registered a shot on goal for the Orange in the 83rd minute. It was turned away by Adelphi keeper Thorne Holder, who totaled two saves to earn his second shutout of 2010.
Syracuse returns to action next weekend in the annual Mayor's Cup. The Orange will face Northeastern on Friday, Sept. 10 and Columbia on Sunday, Sept. 12 in the four-team tournament hosted by Hartwick College.
Match Notes: Junior Nick Roydhouse made his first start as a member of the Orange as did Saul and sophomore Mawuena Agbossoumonde … Vuolo's six stops increased his career saves total to 211 counting his three seasons at Hartwick.
