BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Syracuse (7-0) captured the Samford Tournament title with sweeps of Northwestern State, 3-0, and Samford, 3-0, on Saturday. Senior outside hitter Hayley Todd earned tournament MVP honors, tallying 47 kills, 13 total blocks and a .337 attack percentage through the four matches while junior outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre and senior right side hitter Mindy Stanislovaitis earned all-tournament team honors.
“We had a really balanced offense tonight,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Our defense also stepped up, it was an all-around effort.”
The Samford Tournament title is the second of the season for the Orange, which won the Colgate Classic championship last weekend. It marks the first time Syracuse has opened the season with a pair of tournament titles since 2004. The 7-0 record also marks the best season start since 2004, when the team rattled off nine-straight wins before being dealt its first loss.
Lefebvre led the Orange offense on Saturday, tallying 21 kills and 15 digs through the two matches, while Todd was second with 19 kills and four total blocks. Freshman middle blocker Lindsay McCabe added 16 kills and eight blocks on the day, while Stanislovaitis had 14 kills and five rejections. Sophomore Samantha Hinz led the team defensively at the net with nine total blocks while added seven kills. Classmate Laura Homann directed the offense, dishing out 58 assists while adding a trio of kills, two service aces, six digs and four total blocks.
Junior libero Ashley Williams led the back row defense, recording 19 digs while senior defensive specialist Sarah Hayes had 13.
The Orange opens its home schedule when its hosts Buffalo on Tuesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Women's Building.
